20-year old Gregory Halman on pace for 40-40

Recommended Posts

Mariners prospect from the Netherlands...

He was signed at 16 years-old by Seattle and now looks like he's about to make a splash. His numbers thus far:

.279/.325/.594 (.919 OPS), 19 HR, 14 2B, 3 3B, 51 RBI

22/1 SB/CS, 14/74 BB/K

April: .264/.310/.462

May: .270/.333./.670

June: .342/.342/.763

Prospect Insider says this about him:

Strengths: Halman is an excellent athlete with a lot of upside, and his ranking here in the top 10 is almost solely based on his risky high-ceiling potential. The 19-year-old possesses well above average speed and raw power that may ultimately surpass that of Wlad Balentien. Halman is already a solid defender and has the tools to excel in the field, on the bases and at the plate. At 6-4 and 220 pounds, Halman can be an imposing force and could develop into a dominant player, using all five tools.

Weaknesses: The former MVP of the Dutch Professional League is inexperienced and needs a full season under his belt in order to make marked progress in his overall development.Halman needs to work on a lot of things, but first and foremost he must learn how to approach each at-bat. He hasn't shown any patience at the plate and is only a step from being considered a true hacker. The good news is that he's young enough to turn himself into a blue chipper.

WOW...I'll be honest, never heard of him Callis has him as one of his prospects to watch out for, #'s are sick. Thanks I plan on looking into to him more.

Definitely worth keeping on eye on. The bad news for the kid is that he plays for the Mariners. Bavasi is probably working on a deal now offering him, Clement, and Balentien in a package to try and get Broussard back.

Thanks for the highlight, great tools! I'll watch his K-rate, and judge his future as a ballplayer based on how fast it improves. Right now, it's absolutely awful, but he has plenty of time and will hopefully learn!

We can only hope. Anything that gets them out of Seattle would be a plus at this point...

PROMOTED to AA.

Again, he's only 20!

WOW...I owe you big time Dodger if this kid continues. I knew of him, but really didn't follow him until your post. I, since them, claimed him.

prospect insider is a site dedicated to Mariners prospects. it's a nice source of info, especially if you just added halman and want to keep tabs on him. they happen to be concerned that halman is being rushed, but if he performs well at west tenn at his age, he'll definitely go into 2009 as a top prospect.

Thanks a lot man, yes I've been reading blogs suggesting that many feel he is being rushed. But, if this kid can somehow hold his own, WOW, he will def. be a top prospect next year.

His K/BB rate is scary, and not in a good way.........only the Mariners would rush him like this!

Ah, Seattle rushing prospects. Some things never change. "Hey, it worked for Griffey and Arod, why not just keep doing it?"

Halman is having a sick year. Because of Halman's promotion, the M's also promoted top OF prospect Michael Saunders, 21, to AAA. Saunders has already played in the futures game and is much more polished than Halman, but also still has some ways to go in the K/BB dept.

Halman probably has the higher ceiling and more true sleeper status, but Saunders could compete for a spot on the opening day roster come next spring, if he keeps moving at this rate.

Hit a GW-HR in the 11th IP to win the game, in 2nd-game @ AA, good start kid after an 0-5, 3-k performance.

What's his reasonable ETA?

I'd say 2010 at the earliest unless he improves his bb/k ratio

They could have a pretty sick OF if the trio of Balentien, Saunders and Halman play as hyped.

Knowing Seattle, I wouldn't be surprised if it's September. They rush their prospects a lot.
