Danny Jansen 2019 Outlook

Recommended Posts

What do you guys think of Danny Jansen heading into 2019?

The Jays shipped Russell Martin off to the Dodgers and it looks like DJ will be the starting catcher this year. He’s popping up on a few sleeper lists I’ve seen.

.260/.340/15 homers seems like a decent projection for him. He has the ability to take a walk so He gets a boost in OBP leagues.

If you are punting catchers, as good as any to roll the dice on.  I suppose there is upside, but I'm probably not reaching for him.  Might be a little less likely to be a BA drain as some, but not as much HR boost as others.  I did pick him up in a keep 10 keeper league where we also keep 10 prospects so I don't have to worry about catcher in the draft.

A must have and taken in all dynasty leagues too.  Best of the younger prospect (last year) catchers for hitting though obviously not top tier as none of them are yet but he is only 24 years old and should get better.

Since he still qualifies as a "prospect" despite being up last year he is listed as the number one catcher at respected prospect site Imaginary Wall:

Quote

Excellent contact percentage-launch angle combo whose exit velocities don’t jump off the page but generates power with quality contact. Jansen could be one of the better hitting catchers in short order.  2019 Projection: Prime Projection: 64/21/73/.273/.351/.463/6

That's Runs, HRs, RBIs, the .273 average followed by OBP and Slugging then Steals in that projected stat line.

That would be an insane line and easily a top 3 catcher year. I'm not so sure he will do that but he's definitely on my catcher list. Should be pretty cheap still.

Mine too.

Traded away Gary Sanchez in my keeper league last year and obviously I'm back to actually drafting catchers again.  I plan on skipping the position and drafting Jansen whenever I feel the time is right.  While that line may be a bit high, I don't think it's unreasonable.  At least for his ceiling.

That line was his Prime Projection so that may come in a couple of years.

for now I think he can hit 15 bombs with a decent average/OBP

Leading off today versus a lefty. Huge development if it sticks all year.

I agree. It's also encouraging that he is already getting some time at DH. Hard to know where he'll stick in the lineup.. He's batted 8th, 5th and leadoff now.

8th in that horrid loser filled lineup is a death sentence to stats.  Hopefully he stays in upper half so he’s at least surrounded by a few people with pulses.  First lefty they’ve seen and he’s leading off is encouraging.

Yeah, the Jansen who bats 5th and who is now batting leadoff vs the LHP is the Jansen I hope we continue to get.

More importantly, it shows the confidence the Blue Jays have in him.  First giving him the primary catcher role, then keeping him in the lineup at DH on off days and batting first.  Impressive.

Montoyo was not hesitant to pinch hit Tellez for Maile (who was playing catcher), to take Jansen off DH and in as catcher too. The creativity that can happen with this lineup seems to be trending in the right direction for their "star" hitters.

His defense right now will keep him in the lineup too. He's got a solid arm on him, and seems to be catching/gameplanning guys fine so far.

Agreed, the roster flexibility they have after dumping Kendrys Morales should be great in terms of keeping his bat in the lineup. Just need him to start producing now...

No doubt, I'd just hate to see him losing ABs if he's not hitting.

Hitting is contagious.  Unfortunately there may not be many contagious streaks to latch onto.  This is a terrible lineup with a ton of the same type of all or nothing bats.  Getting Vlad in there should hopefully help some.  Because as is I would argue there isn’t one even slightly above average stick in that lineup.  It’s average to below average.

Back to 8 in potentially the worst lineup in mlb.  If he’s 8th vs RHP there’s zero value in redraft IMO there’s no statistical upside being in this awful lineup.  All these hitters in this lineup legit are losers.

Vlad is coming to save the day... who else are you gonna go with at catcher anyway?

If you have the option of Jansen vs Barnes RoS??  Probably not a league-winning decision, but I don't think it's unfathomable there may be a better/comparable option, in some leagues.

Yep the football crowd has stumbled into the place since apparently MLB only plays 16 games a year now.

They are a worse lineup than the  Orioles Tigers Giants? All this from 5 games into the season?

Pretty damn close.  It’s a terrible lineup. They have a ton on the way though.  This lineup right now though is filled with placeholders.  Won’t be bad for long.  As is it’s an easy bottom 5 lineup.

It's pretty much the same lineup as  last year.  Except for a full year's worth of the star of this thread vs Russ Martin who gave dead plate appearances.  Drury is better than Solarte who was useless.

Admittedly this team offense has looked terrible.
