Matt Olson 2019 Outlook

Not much of a sample to go off to determine the power outage.  Stanton was last major player who had it and he just ended up sitting the season out because team blew chunks.  The most recent guys to have the injury weren’t huge power guys.  Gurriel, Deshields, Cervelli.  Here’s some other examples though:

Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzkimissed nearly six weeks of action after breaking the hamate bone in his left wrist in June of 2010. He came back and had 18 home runs and 61 RBIs in 235 at-bats after the injury that season after totaling 9 homers and 34 RBIs in 235 at-bats before the injury.

San Francisco Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval missed almost seven weeks after surgery to remove a fractured hamate bone from his right hand last season. He had 18 home runs and 56 RBIs in 343 at-bats after returning. One year to the day of his surgery, Sandoval suffered the same injury in his left wrist on May 2 of this season.

Save it for later.

Hamate bone sapping power = FAKE NEWS!

He made a pretty sweet defensive scoop to help Chapman's great defensive stop. Showed off the gold glove skills tonight.

He also hit another homer. That's two in two days. Not bad, but we'll never know how many he could have hit if he hadn't broken that hamate.

That's three homers since his return (one in the minors). Is his power completely sapped ROS now, though?

It kind of feels like the humor of this particular joke might be completely sapped at this point.

I agree, but LITERALLY every single RW blurb mentions how hamate injuries usually sap power.

[...] On page 2 I posted examples of guys who had hamate injury and their power wasn’t sapped at all.  That notion is completely made up and fake.  There’s been zero correlation between hamate and power loss from guys who have shown the ability to hit it over the fence more than 10 times a season.  Maybe Adam Engel would have his power sapped from a hamate injury, then again he never had any from the beginning.

Yeah, I remember our discussion. It was always a legitimate concern but as you pointed out with tulowitzki and others, it's hardly a surefire death sentence. It certainly seems like that concern is past us at this point. Now it's whether the offense can get it together enough to afford him more than simple solo shots.

Bunted against the shift and hit an opposite field ding dong. You have got to like that.

The OPPO shot is such a good sign. Not even an inclination of any type of pain at all and the power is obviously still there. Gota think without a re occurance of some sort, he should only fine tune the swing that much more as the season progresses.

Yeah but it could be at 80% if it wasn’t for that damn Hamate.

Crushed another one.

A 3 run shot.  Before last night, he had 4 homers and 5 rbi.

5th homer last night, 2 doubles the night before. Good thing he didn’t break a hamate bone because those breaks really sap your power!

Rotoworld didn’t even give him a blurb after his last home run. I guess they are tired of sounding like fools.

#7.  I think it’s safe to say he found his power stroke.  Looks like the Hamate is nonexistent.
