Kris Bubic, SP, Royals

Recommended Posts

Didn't see a thread on him yet. Drafted #40 overall in 2018 out of Stanford. Was also the 2017 Cape Cod League pitcher of the year.

Got his feet wet with 10 Rookie-ball starts last year posting a 4.03 ERA in 38 IP with a 53/19 K/BB. Now at Lexington (A), he's seemed to have settled in: 29 IP 1.86 ERA, 0.79 WHIP, 45/7 K/BB and just had a nice 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 10 K performance on 4/28.

One would think a promotion would not be far off, but KC has 3 other top pitching prospects hanging around High-A Wilmington right now (Singer, Lynch, Kowar), so he may be at the mercy of their progression.

Scouting Report

According to MLB Pipeline, his change up grades out the highest of his pitches, at 60. But, the others aren’t far behind with his fastball grading out at 55 and his curve at 50. The 6’3″ 220 pound lefty led the Cape Cod League in strikeouts last summer, and he was awarded the pitcher of the year award.

He also added to his fastball velocity in the spring, reaching a high of 95 MPH. He also adds an average curveball to the mix. His pitches, along with his ability to control them, make a strong case for him as he ascends through the minor league system. The one worry, though, according to MLB Pipeline, are his mechanics. They also said, though, that it is no cause for concern because it does not affect his ability to deceive hitters and throw strikes.

This kid continues to shove. A- ball was no challenge at all for him. A promotion was seemingly imminent and now has been moved up to A+. Made his first start for Wilmington today (against Myrtle Beach) with the following stat line:

5 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 6k (9 swinging strikes), 96-55 pitches. All 4 walks in the same inning (2nd), settled down nicely after that.

Kid is going to appear on a lot of mid-season lists. Posted 75 k in 48.1 IP with a 2.08 and 0.89 before the promotion.

First start since the Future's Game:

7 ip, 0 ER, 2H, 1 BB, 10 k

Settling in nicely at this level since some early struggles.

Quickly becoming my favorite Royals pitching prospect amongst the big four (Bubic, Kowar, Singer, & Lynch.)

Maybe he was juiced up, but I thought his stuff was much better than reported during the Futures Game. A lot of his scouting reports make him seem like a better Brett Anderson.

Kid can really pitch. A lot of MiLB throwers, but this guy has a strong feel for the craft already. Definitely stashable. At this point, barring and injury, he should get an audition for KC late in 2020.
