Posted (edited)

2 days ago was the day from hell for closers, but even yesterday and today haven't been the cleanest.  Carlos Martinez barely escaped with one yesterday, and now Kennedy does the same today.  I'm still glad that Kennedy got it today, but come on guys, clean things up.

Looks like it will just be the one rehab appearance for Eovaldi (struck out the side today in Pawtucket) as Cora said that he will be traveling with the team to Baltimore. Won't be activated tomorrow, according to Cora, but should be available either Saturday or Sunday.

Heavy usage the last few days.   I wouldn't worry about today's outing, just take the save.

Neris gave up a homer but closed it out as well.  Not much clean lately.

Hell Eovaldi drove up from Pawtucket after a very early start time down there today and watched the end of the Red Sox game at Fenway.  They showed him hanging over the dugout fencing looking like he'd love to be activated immediately and pitch in two games today.

He pitched an inning with the PawSox and struck out all three batters with the velocity in the high 90's.  He is ready to go.  Sox finally have a closer.

Any chance Workman sticks as the closer for the Red Sox?

I don't think it's a zero chance.  Eovaldi could suck upon return.

there were already different guys getting random save opps, and now you add eovaldi to the mix, the answer is no...he will not be the fulltime closer for the ROS

So is Workman moved to the main setup guy (I.e. is he just as valuable in a holds league)?

Anyone who is hot may set-up ... or not.  It is match-ups and firemen and lotto tickets right now in the Sox bullpen.  If it is a better match-up in the 6th he could be used there.  Or the 8th.  Or whenever.

There is no set roles there except they want Eovaldi to close.  But he probably won't be able to close two days in a row as yet because they want to be careful with Eovaldi just back with only a single, one inning re-hab.  So Workman or Barnes or Walden or Hembree or whoever could pick up some vulture saves at first as well.

Assuming SF opts to sell despite their torrid streak that's put them a few games out of the WC.  Who do you all think will be left standing with the closer role?  It's got to be either Melancon or Moronta imo.  Who would you all bet on?

The only real answer here is who knows.  The pen has been a work in progress all season.  No matter what we all think,  Workman has been the most effective guy so far.  Do with that info what you will.

See, I think he's getting dealt if the Giants opt to sell.  No reason to keep him when teams will pony up something for a competent reliever.

They’re 2.5 games back of the WC.  I’m not convinced they’re going to sell.

But 4 teams ahead of them and 3 teams within 2 of them on the backside. This gives them leverage but they need to sell. And once they sell a lot of arms could go so it's hard to say who will be next man up when you don't know who will be left behind.
