7/20 - GAME DAY THREAD

Every sport has eliminated the defensive side of it. Basketball is all about the  the 3 pointer, ticky tack foal calls on shooters  Baseball lowers the mound, brings in the fences and juices the balls. Football the defense is not allowed to hit anymore. can;t touch a QB or a WR after 5 yrds without it being a penalty. Hockey they allow the 2 line pass which open up the ice play 4-4 in overtime. NO sport for the last 40 yrs has EVER made rule that helps the defense.

The shift, which is what your initial complaint sprang from, is a level of defense that has completely changed the game of baseball. Openers and pitching specialists could also be argued are forms of defense. Baseball has possibly never been more defensive focused. It's just that offense has also taken lessons from science and data. As far as the juiced ball, I don't think there's any real reason to think it was intentional - just an unintended byproduct of improved efficiency in making the baseballs.

They brought in two guys with ERAs over 5. Horrendous.

Would it make it better or worse if Roberts took Bellinger out in order to do this?

With the Dodgers collapse today has a example. I am not so sure that throwing gas can carrying RPS out there has specialist is helping the defensive aspect of the game much. I rather have a Pitcher has good has Kershaw out there in the 8th and 9th with 130 pitches then to bring in these RPs who cant get anyone out and specialize in blowing leads

Hindsight is 20/20. Doesn't even apply to Kershaw; he's (at the very least, one of) the biggest health concerns in the league as a SP; this game means absolutely nothing next to him being healthy for October. And my guess would be that Kershaw's ERA the 3rd time through the order isn't over 5, but I bet it's also a significant jump from the 2nd time through.

There's a big difference between making a dumb decision, and making a sound decision based on statistics and having it blow up in your face. You can't be mad at the latter.

Was hoping for a Robles and/or Jansen save or win. Angels and Dodgers both had to go and score a bunch top 9. boo

The win is actually going to the guy who also gets credit for a Blow save Baez
