In a 10 team Yahoo H2H league, our schedule came out. We play 5 weeks in the regular season and somehow I play one team twice in 5 weeks.  How does that happen?

I am also in a 10 team h2h league in yahoo. You probably have to tweak your settings. We usually skip the last week of the season and have 6 teams that make the playoffs. To get an additional two weeks in the regular season you need to change it so 4 teams make the playoffs and the last week of the finals ends on september 27th and not on the 20th.

We blithely carry out our lives with a perpetual acceptance of mortality. Thousands die everyday of whatever. On average, 151,600 people die in the world everyday. After this seemingly necessary shutdown, we're just gonna have to get on with our lives with reckless abandon. Why is it never incumbent on the old and unhealthy to sit things out while this disease runs its course? Why am I, a 35-year old who takes his health seriously, forced into unemployment, told to stay home, shamed for wanting to partake in some of his favorite activities? Is it really a mystery what demographic of people will overwhelm the hospitals?  With 40% obesity, I never knew Americans were so concerned with their health? Are hospital resources not already being strained by diseases caused by obesity?

I don't think you understand the severity of this. Covid-19 is the third leading cause of death now in the US behind cancer and heart disease. It is overwhelming our hospitals right now, and if there wasn't a shelter in place order in most states, the mortality rate would probably be even higher. Even Trump's administration is assuming 100,000 - 200,000 lives will be lost to just Covid-19, assuming all precautions are made. I Had a second job that I lost and am upset about it, but I am not gonna selfishly downplay this situation because my own employment status... Maybe the bigger issue is that the US of A has a crappy system in place where people are one missed paycheck away from becoming destitute and a healthcare system that should be considered an international crime for being way too expensive and inaccessible to millions of people that need it.

that MLB is actually talking about the possibility of the entire season being cancelled is mind boggling. I don't want to be insensitive, but I want baseball. I don't even really care if it's teams playing in front of completely empty stadiums, I want baseball this summer. I refuse to believe this will continue like this through July. how can they say will still be like this after all of April, all of May, and even all of June.

They aren't even edging towards cancelling it yet, look at the article I posted above. The Mlb and MLBPA are close to an agreement in extending the season into november to potentially give us as much baseball as possible.

And why not?  US has 18.62% of their population in the age range of 0-14 vs 13.6% in Italy  That extra bit of context can help when you're talking about a country with a population where 17.25% smokes vs 24%.  The elderly comments are just silly and not going to go over that one again.

    Read comment above, homes.

You too read the comments above homie. 😘

This is false.  There are way more smokers in the US it isn't even close. Italians are also healthier than Americans, in general.  Saying that Italy has a "disproportionate elder population" is an exaggeration.  They're also a country with one of the highest life expectancy's in the world.  This virus is devastating that. The virus doesn't only kill the elderly.

that's actually not true homie, italy has a higher smoker rate per capita over the United States. And it is not an exageration that they have a higher elder population in relation to the rest of the country. Germany is seeing a decline coronavirus and they are not in complete lockdown.

Let me know when the Italian sports leagues are going to resume because our measures to contain this virus are nothing like what S Korea, China, and Japan did. Our country as a whole has underestimated this virus from day one and continues to do so.

I know we have dragged our feet and not everyone is taking this shelter in place very seriously... But the US is slightly different from Italy. For one thing Italy has a disproportionate elder population. Also There are a lot of smokers in Italy compared to the USA. I am not saying that we are gonna get out of this unscathed, but there are other factors as to why Italy is suffering worse than the rest of the world. I am still gonna stick by my point that baseball in Mid-May is still possible with most of the country still in Quarantine and they play in empty stadiums, this is not unreasonable at all. Even if there is going to be NFL in the fall, it will be with empty stadiums, that is going to have to be the new norm for this year.

I just really need baseball right now to help distract me... I can only watch so many old games on MLB Network.

May?? I don't think we have a season at all

Why do you even think that???? Japan and Korea are now starting their seasons. Are we gonna be completely hunkered down completely for the next 18 months? That's not doable. The reason we are being quarantined now is to slow the rate of spread of the virus as to not overwhelm the hospitals. Eventually things will calm down and we can start the MLB season with no fans in the stands.

Not only that, but a full season as well....Play into Thanksgiving (neutral WS site, if necessary due to weather), get rid of the All-Star break and sprinkle in some DH's throughout the year.  I'm with you, my dude.

Please this. It would make this year slightly better.

Please, do not say baseball in Mid-May in this forum.. i have done so multiple times and have received rather pessimistic responses.

I have said and stand by my prediction of baseball in May at some point.

Baseball in Mid-May, just kidding 😄

  10. Why is everyone being so pessimistic about the season starting mid May??? Our hospitals are likely getting creamed right now... but the CDC recommendation is for no gatherings of 50 people for eight weeks, and them playing in empty stadiums would be optimal for the public for the entire season. It's totally possible that the curve is down around that time of the recommendation, even though the USA was slow to respond. We can't be completely holed up in our houses for the entire year as eventually we'll just run out of supplies and the economic impact will kill more people than the virus itself.

Also, I have been self isolating before my state even ordered shelter in place, so I do think this is a serious situation...

    YAHOO QUESTION:

They have set the tentative start date for May 7th (earliest it can possibly start when factoring in the 8 week ban)

I have my draft this week coming up. I am the commish and can alter settings.

I notice that they have the earliest trade deadline now set for September 6th,2020. The playoff weeks i had set was 21,22,23 which is now set on Yahoo having it end on October 25h,2020.

Will this be a problem not knowing when the league will officially start? What if the season itself is simply shortened and not extended to fit in 162 games? Do we loose our playoffs?

They are probably going to keep changing things. It does seem like Mlb is determined to extend the regular season through at least the end of October.

I think we are the only ones on the boat when stating baseball at some point in May.

I truly do not see any reason why this isnt possible if we continue to make progress in controlling the virus.

Also there is talk about extended the season into November and possibly December with moving games to neutral sites, ie. domed stadiums and places in the south. This has been a really crappy year so far for everyone, and if we still got a full season of games of baseball that would brighten things up for me at least somewhat.

Best case scenario I am seeing a July 1st start based on what it will take to completely suppress this virus to manageable levels.

that's honestly not a best case scenario, they would just cancel the season if the season just starts in July. I can honestly still see the season starting in Mid-May, or June if they just go to empty stadiums for a while. A lot of places are finally going into shelter in place and that could start to help stop the spread in the next 3-5 weeks.

let's be real, the season won't start until July at best, and August realistically.

what is everyone doing for dynasty? we're in a league where players are on an A/B/C contract, and entering their C season you must extend them at $ per year if you want to keep them. having good young players is crucial, because minor leaguers are $5 til the extension.

I went full rebuild, and entering year 3 of our league i'm in prime position, but will be losing a full season on some of these $5 guys. part of me wonders if all values should be frozen for this season, if there even is one.

I am feeling kind of pessimistic about this situation, but we really don't know for sure when the season will start. It could be that the curve is lowered in 2-4 weeks and then maybe they start the season, or play the entire season in empty stadiums. I'm hoping for that at least.

Testing doesn't bring about the flat curve directly.  It will show up way way more cases than has ever been suspected to date.  But that helps with the treatment and shows hot spots which in turn will help in the end.  But the real help is self isolating as much as possible as the wave passes through the population.

Meanwhile they announced today that 40% of all chronovirus hospitalization in the US are for people 20-55 years of age so so much for younger people being "safe" from it.  Meanwhile the party animals at spring break are hellbent on keeping the spreading of the virus going at full speed ahead.  As long as selfish, small-minded people are busy being Typhoid Marys and running around spreading this virus we won't see any flattening of the curve.  Stopping bad behavior will stop the virus continuing to spike more than anything else.

PS: A shout-out to Italy where, despite it being the hardest hit country in Europe, their citizens have remained disciplined so much so that there is PLENTY of toilet paper left for everyone.  Of ALL the weird things we Americans have done in reaction to this crisis the weirdest is nation-wide toilet paper hoarding.  Why???????

Yeah that is bizzare. I think everyone here was deathly afraid of having mud butt apparently.

There is hope that this drug and others might be able to treat the symptoms. That could maybe change the timeline with ending this problem that is disrupting our lives and eventually give us baseball again. Fingers crossed.

Believe me, i understand the severity of the situation, however, it does appear to me that based on the trials and the fact the world is working together for once in an attempt to find a solution to either slow down the virus or eliminate it all together we are heading in a positive direction. Will many more cases/deaths happen before it 'gets better'... 100%.. but, it does appear this may be easier to contain than originally thought.

This article posted regarding chloroquine seems extremely positive, and tbh, not sure why this hasnt been reported on more by news stations..

In other words, i do believe we will see baseball in May.. June at the latest.. likely behind closed doors which is fine with me. I dont quite get the lack of optimism among a few of you who are under the impression we wont see ball till 2021.

I would love to see baseball start in May for sure. I think my pessimism stemmed from Trump himself saying that this may not subside until July or August ( and he is usually a compulsive liar that will say anything to save his behind), so him saying that crossed my mind that this coronavirus is gonna interrupt life here longer than expected.

If they start by early May, and maybe extend the season until Thanksgiving you'd still have a shot at a pretty significant slate of games.  Expand rosters by 3-4 guys and reduce some off days, All-Star break and sprinkle in some doubleheaders and maybe they even get in 162.

    Keep hope alive, my man.

I honestly would love that, but the situation outside of baseball is rather dire. They are projecting that this virus is gonna affect us for the next 18 months. But I do like your optimism. I'll expect the worst, but hope for the best. I really could use some baseball right now to distract my mind as it seems like the world is falling apart and we're gonna look like Snake Plissken in a dystopian future.

I am currently battling cancer and undergoing chemo treatment. My Doctors have told me in so many words that if I get it, "I won't do well". I'm as good as dead if I get it. I have 2 months worth of supplies so I don't have to go out and am isolated at home. I have no choice. It's not panic, for people like me this is a life and death situation. I wish more people would realize that.

I'm pulling for you homie, I hope you have a speedy recover and stay safe.

  20. I am pretty much resigned to the fact that there isn't going to baseball this year.

People underestimated this virus a month ago and now from reading various projections, we may need to be quarantined for more than the original 8 weeks. Everyone stay safe out there, and even if you think the virus isn't going to give you problems, self isolate to you don't potentially give it to someone that could put their life in danger.
