Maybe he should just give up pitching....

4-4 with 2 homers and a stolen base tonight.  Guy could be an top 5 caliber hitter if he focused on it.

He could save his arm till he’s older and pitch till he’s 40 once he’s through with his prime hitting

I'm a huge Angels fan, but they are a bunch of idiots. He should have had TJ months ago.

Yeah - 2019 completely lost at this point,

can anyone offer any insight on why this guy isnt playing AT LEAST 5 days a week?

They need to give Pujols every other day off next year and make him play first when he isn’t resting. I think we see that next year, Ohtani takes the entire year off from pitching but hits 5 days a week. If he does that consistently he could bring 3-4th round value at a huge draft day discount

The assumption is that he'll get it within the first week of October so three months from then he would start swinging again. If the classic timetable holds true he would then be ready for Spring training and should be the team's full time DH next season. I read some chatter that they'll consult doctors about if he can play in the field near the end of the year but that would be stupid imo. Since he is recovering I would imagine he gets a day off per week so he would end up around 130-140 games while recovering from TJS, which is crazy to even think about.

Highly doubt that.

Think it's far more likely he's Joc Pederson.

I definitely see where you're coming from but I don't think we should go as far to say he is Joc Pederson.  I think Shohei has show enough to safely say he can hit for a much better AVG then Joc.

Is he playing beyond this weekend? Worth picking up for the playoffs?

From what it sounds like he will be playing DH for the majority of ROS and will get surgery once the season is over.

What makes you think this? Have you read or heard anything suggesting the Angels were going to wait until after the season for the surgery? Seems silly being that it’s a lost season for the Angels at this point

From a team standpoint it makes no sense to wait on TJ, but from Ohtani's standpoint, a strong DH finish puts him in the running for ROY.

Really it's just been speculation from different writers because they believe it won't matter for Shohei if he waits till the off-season for the surgery since he will miss all of 2019 for pitching regardless.

Quote
Shohei Ohtani likely to undergo Tommy John surgery

After going under an additional MRI following his early exit on Sunday, Bill Shaikin reports that Shohei Ohtani has additional damage in his UCL, and is being recommended for Tommy John surgery.

Fantasy Impact

It is a devastating development for one of the absolutely most intriguing players in all of baseball. Furthermore, the fact that the surgery has not happened yet, and likely won't for another number of weeks, sets Ohtani up to miss the entire 2019 season. It is possible he could still DH for the remainder of 2018 and for parts of 2019 assuming the recovery period goes as planned. There were risks for teams signing Ohtani out of Japan earlier this year and unfortunately for Los Angeles, they have unluckily come to fruition.

The Angels want him to finish the season for the fans and attendance.

Ohtani wants to finish the season to show his doubters he can rake and to win ROY.

Logic says shut him down now and get surgery.

Logic doesn’t always win, I think Ohtani and the Angels get what they want and he rakes ROS

How so?  Look at Ohtani's batted ball numbers compared to Pederson.  Ohtani's are in the elite category, he just needs to lower strikeouts.  It's also his first year in majors and he was trying to pitch the first half of season too and has never really been able to focus on hitting.

Last month (47 AB's) he's batting .347, 1.127 OPS. 6 homers.

His swing is beautiful.

Another homer.  Gonna get over 20 with less than 300 AB’s

Here's the story from today. Ohtani confirms he plans to play out the rest of the year as a hitter and will decide on TJS after the season

Exactly try to get your award get the ABs while you can... At this point if he does opt for surgery it won't be until the season ends.
