Bryan Mitchell 2018 Outlook

Recommended Posts

Padres said he is a lock for the rotation before the season started. He had great k numbers in the minors. Anything to see here?

I think so. Petco as his new stadium is huge upgrade and he has some untapped upside for sure.

"Bryan Mitchell, RHP, San Diego Padres
San Diego acquired Mitchell (and Chase Headley’s contract) from the Yankees in exchange for Jabari Blash. Mitchell was squeezed out of a deep pitching staff in New York, but he has big-league stuff, including a running mid-90s fastball and plus-flashing curveball. The curveball is hard, in the mid-80s, and has well-above-average spin. It also has slurve shape, though, and plays down because of it. He should have an opportunity to throw a lot of big-league innings this year and might just be a minor tweak away from a breakout"

Seems like in the bigs has been more movement/pitch to contact guy his K numbers in the bigs are putrid.  I think he could be effective starter, not sure there is a ton of upside potential here

Padres took on Headley's 13M/yr salary to get him. He has always pitched well in the minors and he still very young. My guess is the Padres see something in him. Could be this year's Trevor Cahill.

Mitchell went 4 vs KC today, allowing 4 runs on 4 hits and a walk.

He fanned four.

He had opened the spring with four scoreless innings.

The Padres seem to like him... Kevin Acee on why Headley trade was about Bryan Mitchell.... buff.ly/2D8xUua

With his success in AAA and now that he's in Petco, he is an interesting deep league sleeper.

His career ERA is also in the 4's and was born in the 4th month of the year.  If he grows another inch he will be 6 foot "Four"

Tough start to the year for Mitchell. His first start was a dud. In his second, he didn't allow a run but walked an uncharacteristic 6 people.

And he has just one strikeout combined between the two outings with an abysmal swinging strike rate under 4 percent.

Judging by his lack of whiffs, you might think he's a soft tosser. But his fastball is averaging 94.6 MPH this season.

I thought he was an interesting sleeper heading into the year. He's a guy who was locked into a rotation spot in a pitcher friendly park, and had success in AAA, including 66 strikeouts in 63 innings there last year. But he never got much of a chance in NY.

He's going to have to start missing a lot more bats or else he's going to get obliterated. Maybe he needs another pitch to succeed at this level?
