Seattle Mariners 2018 Outlook

Recommended Posts

this could a good reason for Seattle to go out and sign 1 (or even more) free agent OF.

Will this team even be able to field a roster?  On radio last week they were saying how the training staff is viewed around league as one of the biggest jokes.  Mariners medical staff may make Ray Ramirez look like Doctor Feelgood.

The injuries are numerous, but not an outlier among MLB teams these days.  The problem is the concentration of them in the OF and the lack of depth at both SP and OF when injuries do inevitably happen.

I like these guys for fantasy purposes, and may as well put em on your DL and wait.  Just irritating as a Mariners fan:  we have neither a win-now, all-in agenda nor a reboot agenda.  No MiLB depth, and not enough firepower to compete now.  It's a terrible limbo.

You're not even safe in a backfield game for the M's ?. (hit in head by a pitch)

You can’t make this stuff up.  Ryon Healy heading for MRI on ankle after injury in post game workout yesterday.  On heels of Nelson Cruz slipping on stairs after homer, this team invents new ways to get injuries on an almost daily basis.

You should know better than to mention “heels.”

Is Juan Nicasio Dominican for DOUBLES allowed?  5 straight doubles.  Just a miserable offseason acquisition.

what does Seattle do now with Cano about to miss significant time?

do they move Gordon back to 2B and put someone else in CF?

X-rays have revealed a fractured fifth metacarpal in Robinson Cano's right hand.

Cano suffered the injury when he was hit by a Blaine Hardy pitch on Sunday. How long he'll be sidelined isn't known yet, but he's obviously headed to the disabled list and his absence figures to be a pretty lengthy one. The Mariners could potentially move Dee Gordon to second base to fill in for Cano. Taylor Motter would seem to be a likely candidate to take Cano's roster spot, especially with Jayson Werth hitting only .155/.222/.224 at Triple-A Tacoma.

Options seem to be (1) Gordon to 2B with Motter/Heredia/Romine getting the OF starts, or (2) calling up Motter or Beckham to play 2B and leaving Gordon in CF. I'd personally go with the first option, but could understand if the call is to leave Gordon in CF since that's the long term plan.

If I see Juan Nicasio pitch in a game again that isn’t +/- 4 runs I’m going to take a Louisville through my flat screen.

no on Gordon.

Looks like the tweeter guy might have it possibly wrong.  From Rotoworld write-up here by Drew Silva:

Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto said Tuesday evening that Dee Gordon will begin taking grounders at second base in anticipation of a possible move back to the position. Gordon shifted to center field when Seattle acquired him from the Marlins this offseason and he has played below-average defense in that unfamiliar spot. The 30-year-old speedster was an excellent defender at second in Miami. Guillermo Heredia would stand to get more playing time in center, which is deserved given his promising start to the season both offensively and defensively.

Within weeks they've gone from having one of the best offenses to one of the worst..

Yes, the injury bug has hit them hard.

Unrelated, but Dan Vogelbach needs a place in this lineup.   I have no idea how to pull that off (can Healy play OF at all) but Vogelbach has mastered AAA and deserves the opportunity to play and adjust at the MLB level.   Or they should trade him.

@Cmilne23 thoughts on what the M's do now at 2B?   Surprised Vogelbach was the corresponding move.  Do you think there is any room for ABs for him with the current lineup configuration?

For them to have completely fallen apart in the third like that and then scratch their way back...just unreal. props to Whalen for shutting em down for 4 innings.

Yet another awesome game.

Sox fan checking in. It was a great game, even with the lousy outcome. ;)

I was in town over memorial day weekend and caught a couple of games against MIN. Really impressed with the ballpark (first trip) and had a lot of fun watching your team play exciting baseball. So many close games, must be pretty thrilling and nerve wrecking!
