Max Muncy 2018 Outlook

Curious why you think Taylor's entire 2017 season was a fluke, but Muncy's first half of the 2017 season wasn't.

Never said Muncy's wasn't.  Really didn't apply there at all.   I was just commenting on their lineup/roster and players potentially standing in the way of Muncy getting everyday playing time again.

Out today. Didn't even expect him to play today against a lefty and after going 0-7 in the last 2 games. Dodgers facing a lot of lefties this week. I totally understand people keeping him because of his position eligibility, but I also can totally understand people needing to drop him because of injuries and needing to make full use of every single roster spot. He's just not going to play full time, unfortunately.

I enjoyed the ride.

Dozier will need some time away due to his own heart and dizziness issues.  Time for Muncy to make hay while the sun is shining on his PT.

It doesn't help that Dave Roberts seems to have more than just a baseball thing for Kike Hernandez.  Granted he did have a stretch where he was hitting really well, but honestly he's nothing more than a bench player to give somebody a day off, especially now with their added depth.

Still, trading for Dozier is still going to make it really hard for Muncy to get everyday playing time since Taylor and Pederson are still going to play everyday (the latter against RHP).  Kemp, Bellinger, and Puig are locked in at all 3 OF positions if Bellinger doesn't go back to the IF.  You have Turner, Machado, Dozier, and Taylor to man 3 IF positions, so either one of them sits and they do a rotation or 1B as to be occupied by somebody other than Muncy and he's the odd man out.

Yeah Kike is now hitting .217.  Bellinger is just fine out there in CF.  Now Muncy can split time at 1st and 2nd.

Dozier is fine and healthy and starting tonight.  Muncy still looking at part time status and will have to hit to play.

I can't roster a player getting benched 3 straight games.  If this is his role after the Dozier trade, i might have to drop..

Let him play everyday!! He’s earned the right to play through a slump!

Management seems to have completely changed their position on him since the slump.  He was batting ahead of Bellinger and Kemp almost every day before.

Now when he does start, it’s 7th.  Frustrating because he seems to be back close to first half form.

Kemp has been AWFUL last month but doesn’t seem to affect his spot.  Yea he used to be great but he’s about to be 34 and disappeared for several years.

Bellinger has a good couple of weeks and he’s batting cleanup.  Doziers been pretty bad all year and he’s first.

Muncy just lost all favor with management and it seems impossible to get it back absent homering every other game they put him in

So maybe he's leveled off as the 3-outcome guy at the end of your bench who you can stick into any position when needed.

Or maybe he has a .320 ISO and 154 wRC+ and should be playing every day. Those are star metrics. Not saying he's a star but you don't let a guy with that much power and plate discipline rot on the bench. It's not like he's hitting .220 for the season.

Not to mention the 47.6% hard contact rate and 10.6% soft contact rate.

The guy is EASILY their 2nd best hitter this season, including the new guys they traded for.  He's only behind Machado and it's pretty hard to make an argument for anyone else at 2nd.

First 236 PAs  .280/.419/.640  20 HRs  182 RC+   19.1 BB  22.5K  .282 BABIP

Last 133 PAs  .214/.301/.470  7 HRs  105 RC+   9.8 BB   35.5k   .281 BABIP

The problem is in recent weeks Dozier, Bellinger, Puig, Joc and Turner have all been better than him. On most teams, he would still be an everyday guy. Its just a problem because of the roster. Not to mention his K% Rate has spiked. Given he doesn't exactly have a long track record of doing this. We don't know if this just pitchers exploiting holes in his new power swing or not.

Granted Kemp has been much worse. So its really him that should be benched. Guess it depends on how comfortable they are with bellinger in CF everyday.

Idk if I got to type in all caps or something but MUNCY IS LEGIT.

All baseball players go through slumps at some point it's not that serious

Man legit on pace to hit 40+ HRs if he played everyday

This is nothing against Muncy, but he could have hit 5 HR's last night and he probably still wouldn't play everyday because Dave Roberts has to play other guys too even if Muncy deserves to play everyday again.  That's a knock on Roberts again, not Muncy.

So even in his terrible last 133 PA’s  he’s still on about a 35 HR season pace.

Unfortunately for Muncy, the manager finds himself with “too many mouths to feed,” and Muncy has found himself in a R/L platoon (it appears). Do I think it’s dumb? Yeah, especially when you see that Muncy hits LHP as well as RHP (OPS & wRC+ very similar). But I’m not sure it’ll change much any time soon.

Looks like Dodgers have 3 more LHP coming up his week, so he’ll likely only start 3 of the 6. An injury may be the only thing that changes this ROS.

Muncy started against LeBlanc.  Bet he starts today against Elias.  Mediocre arms.  Crushed the best closer in baseball.  At this point of the season, got to keep playing Munster as long as he keeps hitting.

I'm not sure where you got that a 105 RC+ was "terrible" nor doubted his power since he had a healthy SLUG

Ideally Matt Kemp, Chris Taylor and Kiki Herandez would all sit on the bench...but the first 2 were full time players not long ago. So its not odd  they still get spot starts. Muncy was the odd man out at first because everyone else was hitting better in recent weeks.

It was sarcasm because a few people in this thread have said the first half wasn’t the real Muncy and the bad Muncy we’ve seen lately is the real Muncy and he’s not good.

I think the Dodgers’ treatment of Muncy makes zero sense.  Along with that, there was really no need for them to trade for Dozier
