Who do I pick up? 2 ROS Questions

Recommended Posts

Same league for both questions,10 cat head-to-head Yahoo! league

In a turn of weird events in a Yahoo! free league, Gary Sanchez is on the WW.  We all know he has been abysmal in terms of BA but has still provided decent power and RBI production.  So, here are the two questions:

JT Realmuto or Gary Sanchez ROS?  My gut feeling is the latter easily -- less average but better power and RBI, but also probably a lot less games played too.

Brandon Nimmo or Eduardo Escobar?  Escobar is the weakest player on my team believe it or not, and Nimmo steals bags and just leaves me with this nagging feeling he will leave behind a tremendous year, whereas Escobar will plateau and will have a second half 50% as good as his first.

Thanks for your help!

I definitely like Nimmo. Escobar's been cooling off a bit and Nimmo provides a ton of talent. As for the catchers, I think Realmuto will actually be better ROS. Gary Sanchez currently isn't even hitting .200. That drastically has to change if he's going to provide more value than Realmuto who's has a .283 career average. Of course Sanchez does have more power and a lot more potential, but he's got to start hitting better than .250 the rest of this season to provide more value ROS. And I'm not confident that's going to happen.

That being said I'd probably pick up Sanchez anyway and try to shop one of Realmuto/Sanchez. Both guys are high-end catchers and neither should be on the WW. You should be able to get a decent return for either one if the guys in your league really understand the value of catchers.

Nimmo is easily better IMO.  As far as the C goes, Realmuto is probably the only Catcher I see on par with Sanchez.  So if it doesnt cost you anything to pick up Sanchez, I would do it and try and trade one (although I know trading is almost impossible in free Yahoo leagues because they become ghost towns).  Tough to say, but if you had to have one I would keep Realmuto for ROS.  He will help in all categories whereas Sanchez will kill you in BA.

I like JT & wonder if MIA may trade him too, for prospects. If so, makes him even better for rbi's & runs. I like the idea if picking up Sanchez & trading 1 if them.

As for Nimmo/Escobar, it's tough. I think Escobar will be good ros. 1 worry I have is what happens to Nimmo, when Cespedes & Bruce returns? Do the NYM screw it up rotate 4 OF? I would hope not. No issues on going with Nimmo, but would trade Escobar while value is still high. Good luck!

Even though I drafted 10th, this team has an embarrassment of riches.

In order to pick up Sanchez, I'd have to drop one other offensive player, and I don't see how I can do that.  I'm a big believer in just the one bench player for your offense and the rest SP and RP (usually 3-4, ideally 3 and then one stud like Hader).

As for Nimmo, I'm very close to pulling the trigger.  Just a little hesitant, since at least Escobar will be hitting 3rd or 4th most nights in a respectable Twins lineup.

Thanks for the thoughtful replies, super grateful!

Seeing your full lineup now, I probably wouldn't trade for Nimmo. Where are you going to play him? I mean I'd probably play him over Pham but I don't think that's much of an upgrade there. And by moving Escobar, you wouldn't have a backup 2B, 3B, or SS (since JoRam would be stuck at 3B and Baez at 2B). So your bench player would only be able to replace the OF. Kind of puts you in a bad spot positionally.

As for adding Sanchez without dropping Realmuto... I'd have to see what your pitching looks like. I'd say probably drop someone there and again try to move one of your bats once Sanchez is picked up. I'm thinking SP is a spot you could target for an upgrade, but I'd also look at 1B. Aguilar has been great, but I'm not sure what his playing time is going to be like with Thames back. I've got Aguilar on my squad and I'm pushing hard to move him before he loses his value. So OF or C would be positions to move for SP or 1B if you get Sanchez.

That's my pitching staff.

Nimmo and Sanchez both are on the WW, hence the ROS question...one requires a claim (Sanchez), the other is free for the taking.

I personally think Aguilar has earned permanent playing time and the pressure to keep his performance up to keep his lineup spot will make that at least safe for this season.  He had another great week and Thames continues to flounder.

You'd think that Aguilar has played well enough to earn a steady spot in the lineup, yet he's missed 4 out of the last 11 games since Thames has been back. Not to say that's going to be the case moving forward, but I'd still keep an eye out to see how that situation plays out. And my recommendation from above is still the same. Gonzalez, Heaney, German, Ross, etc. Pick one of them to drop for Sanchez. Then try to get an upgrade over Mikolas if you can by packaging the extra C and an OF. When you move the extra bat then you can pick up another SP again. If you don't think that's possible, then you could just leave Sanchez on the WW. You mentioned it's a free league, so odds are not everyone is really paying all that much attention anyway and that all of this likely won't make much of a difference. But that's what I would do.
