August Closer Thread 2018

Alright so just so I can make sure I've got it all straight I'm gonna list out the current questionable closer situations.  Correct anything that seems off or add stuff if I forgot anyone because I most certainly did.

1) NYY:  Britton/Betances/Robertson appear to be in a matchup based committee.  Robertson has gotten 2, Britton and Betances 1.  Betances is the best pitcher of the bunch, but will probably be reserved for the best batters.  I'll take Robertson over Britton due to being a RHP but should be totally random.

2) SF: Smith has been shaky a bit but still think it's his job.  Melancon got the call after Smith pitcher 3 in a row, then Strickland the next day with both Smith and Melancon recovering.  Gotta think that's the order for now but if Smith keeps struggling that could change.  Next save opp will be tell us if Smith really lost his job.  Worth keeping a close eye on.

3) WSH:  Gross.  Miller got the last one with Madson just returning.  Best guess is that they were just easing Madson back into it but could eventually be a changing of the guard since Madson and Glover have been awful. Greg Holland hasn't been bad of late either...but uh...yeah won't go there.

4) CHC: Maddon seems to be mix and matching a bit.  I'd guess Strop is still the best bet for now but I guess Cishek and Edwards might sneak in a few.

5) Hou: Seems like Osuna goes in for the tougher outs, be it in the 8th or 9th.  Rondon will still get a few but seems like the short end of a committee.

6) LAA: Parker had pitched the previous 2 days but still it's weird to see him not go yesterday. Wonder if there's something to see there.  Best guess is it's still his job unless news comes out of an injury.  It's not like Anderson or Bedrosian have been knocking the door down with their performances.

Anything I missed?  Not exactly any clear league-winners in there.  Rondon/Betances/Robertson seem like the best bets to steal a few saves and not torch your ratios.  Madson seems like the best bet to take over a role full-time but has been pretty bad all around.  With Smith/Madson lose their jobs Melancon/Miller would be relatively high upside adds.

Correction.  Robertson has gotten 1.  Don’t count a save gotten in a rain shortened 7 inning game.  In fact, that counts as one against him.

Rondon droppable at this point?

Read the post immediately above yours. It’s an accurate assessment of the HOU situation. Whether he’s “droppable” is both league and team specific, and really can’t be answered by anyone but you.

True.  You can also argue that Betances only got in because Kahnle allowed 3 hits and a run in the 9th and Betances came in to get 1 out vs the #9 hitter on the  Orioles.  But in the immortal words of Akon: "Still counts!"  I don't think either fact really changes to projections for the 3 of them while Chapman is out.

Maybe not Madson

Guess that would bump Miller up the list of spec adds.  Hopefully not Glover.  Guess we'll have to see if he's claimed/traded before we get any clarity.

So Justin Miller seems like a better bet than Jesse Chavez huh?

I'd say so but a lot still needs to happen for Madson to get shipped out and they COULD still turn to Glover I guess (not sure why they would but hey).  Not 100%.

No, because Betances was actually used as the closer in that game.  Robertson wasn’t, in the game you referred too.  All 3 have been used, as the closer, once.

So what do you guys think. Is Allen done? Seems like his last save opp should have been the nail in his coffin. Surely Tito will now just put Hand in the role, right? Even in his last save conversion, he allowed a run and three baserunners. In his last four appearances, he's totaled 3 IP, allowing 4 ER and 10 runners. I don't know if Allen is hurt, but I almost think they need to give him a phantom DL trip if he's not and let the guy clear his head or something.

He was never a great closer, but he was a consistent closer until this season when Francona screwed around with his usage. Frankly, I think Allen is toast in 2018. Done.

I have him firmly benched in a deep league that counts saves and holds. Seems like they should work him into some low leverage situations and try and get him right for the stretch/post-season. That's what I think they'll do but I am only guessing.

OK? I'm fairly sure they weren't intending to use Betances as the closer in that game until Kahnle blew up, unless teams are really reserving their best reliever for Caleb Joseph.  But ultimately it really doesn't change anything about what I said though.  Betances will likely get the opposing teams best batters, Robertson vs RHP, Britton vs LHP, and all that may vary slightly depending on rest days, game flow, Green/Kahnle, etc.  It's a committee with a lot of variables that make saves difficult to predict, but Robertson and Betances at least have solid ratios.

We'll know any second who'll be on the mound for the Phillies in the 9th. Who will it be?

Pathetic bullpen. Cost Nola the W.

Everyone just needs to avoid this train wreck of a bullpen. I swap out Sir for Neshek and received the same result.
