Mallex Smith 2019 Outlook

Recommended Posts

He will find himself in the minors very soon, he simply cant get a hit, soon he will be hitting .100. Hitting 9th does not help lol, also this is the same old case of super fast guy who cant hit, IF ONLY ....

He's moving from a dome with field turf to open/retractable roof with grass....

It's still early but my concerns are starting to look justified

Just not hitting at all but still tied for 2nd in MLB with 8 steals.  May just have to stomach some pain in the other categories.

I'm still going to keep running him out every night and hope he starts hitting at a reasonable clip.

Think it is worth noting his career OBP is .340, plenty healthy for a SB specialist.  The move away from Tampa's turf to the grass in Seattle hurts, though he should provide passable AVG/OBP numbers.

He’ll be sitting semi regularly now.  Now that Vogelbach has emerged they were rotating a ton of guys but this guy is clearly the worst of the bunch.  That embarrassment in CF last night will likely earn a trip to the doghouse.  Maybe would be easier to play defense without a 5 pound chain around your neck flailing into your face as you run after balls.  He’ll probably play 3-4 times a week still but don’t be shocked if the DNPs start rolling in more frequently.

You did see that .296 last year, and the .270 the year before - .268 over 1100 ABs?  He HAS hit in the past, and gotten on base, at least well enough to utilize his speed.

Maybe last year was a wild outlier, or he just don't like it in Seattle.

His track record in both minors and mlb show a guy who can hit for average and utilize his speed.  Two bad weeks in April don't negate that.

Just bench him until he starts getting out of this slump.  I imagine most people have enough bench spots to avoid gifting a leaguemate 40 steals.

Off to AAA.  Maybe he can learn how to squeeze a ball into his glove while down there?  One of the most embarrassing starts to a season you’ll see.  Offensively and defensively just an absolute disaster.

Ugh to drop or not to drop.

Realistically best case for a return is next month?

I am holding since I am in a deeper league and there are not good speed alternatives. However, if he continues to hit poorly in the minors for few weeks, then yeah...

3 games in Tacoma he's looking like prime Mallex:

6/14, 1BB:1KK, 3SB

Have to think he'll be up again soon. I'm sure Seattle would rather not keep playing Bruce in the outfield.

I'm steering this rejuvenated hype train, especially cuz he was dropped in both my redraft leagues.

Went 3/5 yesterday with another SB, making him 9/19 with a .500 OBP and 4 SBs in 4 games.

Bishop just sent back down. Smith crushing Triple-A, 7 steals in 8 games, .361 avg. Should be up very soon and will still eclipse 40 steals this season. Pickup now if you need steals and he was dropped in your league.
