Jameis Winston 2019 Outlook

Recommended Posts

Anybody dumping on Jameis must not own him.  Again, who cares if he's terrible in real life?  Dude puts up points!

I think the only QB I would start over Jameis in the fantasy semis is Lamar Jackson just because he has the rushing upside.  I'd start Jameis over Mahomes (who has really been average this last month or so), Deshaun, Dak, Russell (who has crapped the bed as well).  All of them.  Crazy to think about it.  But it's one and done in the semis.  Jameis gets Detroit which is generous against the pass.  Think he can light em up again.

Everyone been pointing out Winston is better on road, i cant wait. Two road games against bad pass coverage D, im ready. Lets just hope Evans can play, big weapon for Jameis. He won me my week along with Aaron Jones so Barkley and Sanders tonight i can watch in peace. On to the playoffs, lets keep him slinging it.

Comparing two different eras is pointless. I will say that 20 years ago everyone would be slobbering over Winston though. That was an era where Favre could do no wrong no matter how many interceptions he threw because he was always able to get his team back in it in with his gun-slinging. Peyton wasn't afraid to sling it either with his ducks. QB's get crucified for turnovers these days.

Winston's turnover rate does need to improve though. What also isn't shown in that stat comparison is how many fumbles lost Winston has had.

Good post. I don’t know if it’s solely a matter of being different eras, but when you’re looking at Manning, Favre & Jameis, people aren’t going to be objective.

Peyton is NFL royalty because of his family, Brett was the charismatic savior of one of the most storied franchises in the league, and Jameis... well, he got arrested for stealing crab legs, accused of sexual assault, and caught on video numerous times acting like a fool.  Whether it’s fair or not, you act like a clown off the field, and people aren’t going to give you the benefit of the doubt on it.

Seeing Jameis on Hard Knocks, etc. and the work he’s done in the community, I do think he’s matured from those days and he’s a bit misunderstood, but people equate behavior off the field with performance on it.  With regards to Favre, from first hand knowledge I think he was probably even more of a scumbag than Jameis will ever be, but that’s another story, and he played at a time when everything you did wasn’t broadcast and scrutinized on social media.

From a football standpoint, I can’t say I’ve watched a ton of Bucs games, but from what I’ve seen he’s improved a lot as this season has progressed.  He’s still mistake prone, but his production can’t be ignored, and his awareness has gotten a lot better. I think that’s why we are seeing more rushing yards... he’s feeling the pressure a lot better and learning how to avoid it. Rather than getting strip sacked or throwing it up for grabs, he’s tucking and running.  He still throws picks, but I think he’s had some hard luck lately with balls bouncing off WRs hands, etc.

The narrative of “great fantasy QB, terrible real life QB” has been beaten to death in this thread, but I don’t think he’s necessarily given enough credit for the positives in his game, because people are conditioned to see the negatives and think... “Oh, that’s just Jameis being Jameis.”

You also have to win to start getting the benefit of the doubt, and he has yet to do that.

Yeah...it's just fun to bash on him.  I own him as well and he's been fine.

Killed me a few weeks but there aren't many QBs that haven't put up a few duds.

Perriman and Watson both looked pretty good yesterday. Perriman had a nice one handed snag on a Jameis overthrow and looked pretty good on his TD. If he can fill in admirably, as well as an uptick for Howard, I think that Jameis could still be a QB1. We just have to hope that David Blough and the Lions can put up points against TB, which he couldn't do against a bad Vikings secondary, though this game being in Detroit does help.

Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians said Jameis Winston (thumb) will get a second opinion on his fractured thumb.

This is bad news. Players only get second opinions when they don’t like the first opinion given. 😔

Oh no, don't do me like this Famous Jameis!  Just when I decide that you enter the circle of trust, you got to break your thumb?  Why can't we all have nice things?

I mean watch this press conference and tell me he doesn't have full mobility with his thumb from 1:20-1:45 in the video. He seems fine and he is playing for a contract, I bet its a pain management thing.

I'm hoping you're right, but to me it seems like he's trying to minimize flexing it, aside from one quick time when you can see he bent his thumb.  Most of the time, his thumb is sticking straight out.

And this is what it's come down to...us fantasy owners trying to analyze press conference video to make sure our newly anointed QB1 can win us our semifinal game.  Sigh...

The fact that he asked for a 2nd opinion tells me way more than this video.

The narrative that he's an awful real life QB is false. He's about middle of the pack in the league if we're being honest. He makes more mistakes than most QB's, but makes a lot more plays as well.

His total QB rating this year puts him smack dab between Rodgers and Brady: http://www.espn.com/nfl/qbr

he stinks. Anyone can sling it to Godwin and Evans and rack up yards and touchdowns. He's a turnover machine

He definitely doesn't stink, but the post you replied to compares him to Brady this season!??! Hahaha, Brady is like 65 years old and done. Let's not compare those two this year. Most of the league should be playing slightly better than a 44 year old QB.

Brady's still good, he just doesnt really have a running game or receivers outside of Edleman. Very bad cast he's working with, but a very good coaching staff

Read a report that he will be able to play through it after seeing the Specialist

this may implode straight into our faces but it's week 15- I don't care. There's literally no one on waivers besides Drew Lock? lol

I said his rating was between Brady and Rodgers. That isn't "comparing him to Brady".

My point was that the narrative that Winston is one of the worst QB's in the NFL is simply not accurate. Tampa Bay would lose more games with a replacement level QB, even if they turned the ball over less, because their defense and running game are both well below average with respect to other NFL teams.

He was fine after Evans went down this week, I'm more concerned about the thumb and the possibility of aggravating the injury during the game and missing time. If I can grab Tannehill off the wire I might play him and hope that he doesn't turn back into a pumpkin yet.
