Wow dang.  Players who make it to the World Series should get an extension on these things.  But yeah he should be looking at 150 million on this next contract.  But now he has to seem like a jerk turning it down right before the parade.

How does he look like a jerk?

He really doesn't ... but fans get butt hurt about stuff like this.  It's a bad situation to put players in.  The rule should be "until the day after that year's World Series parade" as there is really no reason to push for player options to be picked up that early what's a couple more days make a difference?

To add to what FL said above, to a smart fan it doesn't. Any smart fan knows that this is a business, and that on one side there are players trying to squeak out a few extra millions and on the other side there are billionaires. If Strasburg sucked it up this entire last year and had a major injury he wouldn't opt out. If JD Martinez wasn't a zero on defense and felt he had a strong chance of increasing his market, he would have opted out. The only question anyone at all should be asking themselves when it comes to opting out is "What's my market," because ultimately you should (likely) be able to get a similar deal from the team anyway.

The problem is that not every fan is a smart fan, and not every fan understands not only the specific business aspects of the sport, but even that the sport is a business at all. The kind of people who will constantly lambast players for being "greedy" while not even considering who is cashing far bigger checks on the other end. So to some fans, they'll see "Strasburg opted out" and they'll think "GAHHHHH! How dare he leave our team! How dare he not want to be here!" It's stupid, but it's a reality.
