I just don't think that is true at all. I'd agree that years ago more players were perceived to be good defenders, but that's partly because there weren't as accurate and objective ways to measure their true defensive value. Also players today are vastly stronger, faster, and more technically proficient than ever before. 

And yes, there are more terrible defenders on the field than back in the day, but again, that's because they can absolutely crush the ball.

This is probably an ignorant statement, but I was under the impression that the emergence (may not be there best word but the best I can come up with right now... popularity?) of the shift has made defense a bit less important? Or is that wrong?
