De'Anthony Melton 2019-2020 Outlook

Recommended Posts

This guy looks like an excellent specialist in 3 and steals but doesn’t get the chance this year with Ja and Tyus in front of him. I enjoyed owning him and Mikal last year on Phoenix team. They are similar but I like Melton’s upside numbers much more.

Morant in tonight without a mins restriction, should be interesting to see how Melton's mins and role are adjusted as a result.

I'm holding to see what happens with Morant and hoping that he'll play some SG alongside Ja or run the bench.

I'm going to put this out there, if you're forward thinking, stash this guy now, don't wait. Tyus can't defend bigger players the way Melton can at SG, and he doesn't have the shooting potential Melton does.

He was in there at the end of the game tonight, he complements Morant really well. Great two-way play, he really shuts down guys and gets into them. He looks like a young Avery Bradley, even has a very similar looking release and way of running the offense and handling.

He's also very productive, he's got great per-minute lines. Grayson Allen is terrible, I thought he could be decent this year but he's not an NBA caliber bench player, Brooks is getting production by default because they have nothing else, and Crowder is either gone or will be a shut down candidate down the line.

At some point in the near future (I'll say by Mid Jan, not near the end of the season) I predict Melton will step into a consistent 25 minute role, and before long he's going to be starting next to Morant.

He has pat bev like lines without the atrocious shooting and in fewer minutes.

9/6/3 and 1 block and 1 3 in just 18 minutes tonight

7/4/3/2 in 17 minutes the game before

A guard with his rebounding, assists, steals, and threes potential should not be floating around on competitive wires, playing for a horrible team with crappy talent ahead of him. The Grizz have arguably the worst SG / SF rotation in the entire league, so Melton looks like an excellent stash.

Jenkins has been talking him up a lot on top of it.

He wasn't a regular part of the rotation before, he is now.

You can just tell this guy has it, passes the eye test. He produces so quickly, could be a real stud if he gets the start at SG.

They've also been way more competitive in games since he's entered the rotation

I was on the wagon, then off the wagon; and here I am again.

Just dropped House for him as well.

I was off the wagon earlier today - not because I don’t believe but in the short term I didn’t think he’s quite there yet with Allen due back, made a move for valentine, secretly hoping he semi stinks until next week so I can get him back haha

It’s totally subjective, but he looks like a winner on a team full of meh guys.  He seems to give them a push when they need it, so I’m banking on him finding 20 minutes a game, even on an off night.

so am I, but his shot totals are pretty low, his value comes from the Beverley type peripheral lines. For example today he went to the line a ton which isn’t exactly a normality and it made his overall line look way better. I love the guy personally. I was pretty torn on per minute upside between he and denzel. Both are nice nevertheless. I think he gets ignored in most 12 mans until he strings together more consistency, it’s usually about three solid games before people take notice of a no name free agent.

I will try the bandwagon. Just concern if he really can connect a 3 pointer as I havent seen any for games.

he’s not going to be a high volume guy, he’s a great role player who gives you low scoring with peripherals. He’s got brooks Morant Jackson and Valanciunas all eating a lot of shots, when crowded moves out of the picture it’ll free up a lot of shots. You’ll have to ride out some inconsistency, but he’s perfect for a high ppg team that could use a guard to fill up other areas.

Suns shouldn't have gotten rid of this guy. He flashed tons of potential last year. Glad the Grizz are recognizing it.

This is a great write up, and I'm intrigued enough to consider trading for him.

But I'm curious. If Melton is so obviously good, why couldn't he get PT until both Ja and Grayson Allen were out? Seems like the coach's hand was forced, no?

1. He was out with a back injury to start the year and took a while to get back into it.

2. The question is do they consider him a 1 or also play him at the 2. Previously they've mostly used him at the 1 but his path to bigger minutes is if they play him at the 2 next to Jah. He is an excellent defender with a good wingspan and their other options at the 2 aren't amazing

Melton is #50 overall in per 36s so far this season, and his steals has held steady at around 2.5 s/36 since last season.

2.5 s/36 would be among the league leaders, and the Pat Bev comparisons don't do much justice. That steal rate is elite enough that steals alone can provide decent fantasy value at 25 mpg, and anything more down the line would be gravy.

Do we like Melton as a pickup over someone like Bruce Brown who’s been killing it the last few games?? They both can really fill the stat sheet.

I would go Brown for redraft simply because he's getting way more minutes and opportunity.  Dynasty I'd lean towards Melton but its close.  Brown is another under the radar stat stuffer.

I've picked up Melton in almost all my roto leagues where available.  Even better in punt points builds.  No one else on the wire has his across the board stat stuffing / stocks potential.  Maybe Bazemore but he's been ****.  Melton simply touches the court and is already at crooked numbers across the board.  Suns are idiots, obviously.

That's the price they had to pay in order to get rid of Josh Jackson lol
