Carlos Martinez 2020 Outlook

Recommended Posts

What will his role be in 2020 ? I don't see much out there other than speculation that he'll return to the rotation. Seems like something St Louis should figure out sooner rather than later.

He'll be competing for a rotation spot with Kwang-Hyun Kim and a few others during spring training. Something to monitor

With his getting injured last year AGAIN, and the signing you note above on Kim (thereby filling the rotation), I’d be shocked if he gets a chance to start.

but I’m biased, with a big money league relying on him as a closer keeper

Yeah as a Cards fan, I think and hope he closes, his shoulder won't hold up in the rotation. plus he is better as a reliever.

With the signing of Kim and Jordan Hicks recovering from TJ, I don’t see why Martinez wouldn’t be pitching from the bullpen in any capacity.

The Cardinals are best if Tsunami can start this year.

He was a borderline ace before his injuries cropped up, altho he has always struggled with control at times.

But his stuff is nasty, the Cards best possible rotation is fronted by: Flaherty, CMart, Mikolas.

The Cards bullpen is stacked with or without Carlos in it.

Gallegos, Helsley, Cabrera, Andrew Miller, Gant, & Hicks (later in the year). Very solid.

His name is being rumored in a deal for Nolan Arenado.  Obviously any pitcher wearing a Rockies uniform is usually not one to target.

The stuff was there just didn't have command. Notable that Cardinals opted to have him come out of pen rather than start his own game.

Hasnt it been like that with him forever?
Hes a career 8.5k/9 3bb/9 guy.

I feel like theres a considerable amount of hype around them tho. Is it because of the declining workhorses?

Now that he’s in the rotation, where do you think he stacks up? In the Fried, Weaver, Urias tier?

Yeah, that seems about right. I’m skeptical he’ll be the Car-Mart of old, but the upside is worth it. He’s still somehow only 28.

What are the chances he returns to the closer role?

The shortened season plays perfectly for C-Mart

Agreed, for redraft and keepers. It's a perfect way to ease back into the rotation without taxing his arm. I was surprised they were even considering the bullpen.

How confident is everyone with him tonight? Will he be on a pitch count?

Best you can hope for is 5 innings and the W. It's going to be tough.

Really looked bad tonight, didn't hit spots... Twins punished him

Fastball was low 90s. He's supposed to be mid-90s. That's a problem for CMart and his owners

This guy is not a starter IMO

If you don't hit your spots against the Twins, it gets ugly quick.  It actually could've been worse as the Twins loaded the bases in the first and didn't score.

Yahoo: Cardinals manager Mike Shildt confirmed Tuesday that Carlos Martinez (COVID-19) will be brought back as a starter.

Anything to see here?  Is he worth a stash if you have a spare IL slot?

I think he's worth a stash. Latest update has him throwing BP sessions so he should be back by early next week (hopefully).
