Randy Dobnak 2020 Outlook

Sleeper alert!

Battling for the final two spots in the Twins starting rotation; had a nice 2019. K/9 ain't something to brag about but everything else seems to be elite from the surface stats.

Year Age Tm Lg W L W-L% ERA G GS GF CG SHO SV IP H R ER HR BB IBB SO HBP BK WP BF ERA+ FIP WHIP H9 HR9 BB9 SO9 SO/W Awards
2019 24 MIN AL 2 1 .667 1.59 9 5 4 0 0 1 28.1 27 9 5 1 5 0 23 3 1 0 118 291 2.90 1.129 8.6 0.3 1.6 7.3 4.60

Some regression on ERA seems to be in order as FIP indicated and an unsustainable low 5.3% HR/FB ratio. But reason why he seems like an interesting sleeper is because as he's got the following strike zone % and swing strike % shows that his 2019 stats may not be a fluke. Both the swing strike and the strike zone % are above average compare to many other MLB pitchers.

  • 43.8% of his pitches were in the strike zone
  • 12.9% of his pitches resulted in a swinging strike

If he wins a spot in the rotation, I think a sub 4.00 ERA close to 9 K/9 can make him a great pick!

Thoughts?

There are a lot of potential starters in the Twins camp this spring. Although Pineda and Hill won't start the year in the rotation.

RHP Jose Berrios, RHP Jake Odorizzi, RHP Kenta Maeda, RHP Homer Bailey, LHP Devin Smeltzer, and maybe Lewis Thorpe.

If he isn't a starter, he might be a candidate for the bullpen.

Certainly will be interesting to watch how this plays out.

Thoughts on this guy going ahead ?

He was solid last year, decent first start. In a short season seems like he could be a sleeper with a good offense behind him.

Homer bailey just hit the DL, seems to have a spot for now.   May be time to get in now.  anyone else interested?

Streamed him for his first two starts, now that Bailey and Odorizzi are out, hes a strong hold for me.

He should be pitching next on Wednesday correct?

ESPN had him as a streamer option in their daily notes for today.

Small sample size, but he hasn't given up a HR in any of his 6 or so starts from 2019-present.

So far in his 15 IP/3 starts, super low hits allowed just 3 each start and only 4 walks issued. Unfortunately he's only racked up 7 K's over these 3 starts, but the chance to get a win every time out is valuable and MIN should give him a shot at plenty of wins. Plus in many leagues his very low ERA/WHIP can be a big help even if he doesn't contribute many Ks. Going back from last season to present in his 43 IP some as RP some as a SP, he's still only allowed 1 HR.

He’s got nice movement that’s just really hard to square up. Almost reminds me of Hendricks in that way. He’s at Milwaukee next though, which looks decent but it’s a dangerous park to pitch in, greater milwuakee offense has looted terrible.

This was all I could think of when you said he's got nice movement.

Would have liked to see another inning or more from his last night.  Was dealing and only at 71 pitches.  Pitched 21 more his previous outing.  Not sure if they didn't like the matchup but at least it didn't backfire on them.

Seems legit. Pitching motion kinda funky. Short arms the ball. Pitches got some good movement to them and they generate GBs. Tough to hit hard it seems. Nowadays we care more when a guy can strike guys out, even if the ERA and WHIP suck. Dobnak needs more love.
